Katpady: On New Year ’s Day, Sunday, a musical concert was organised by the katpady Adarsh Youth Club (AYC), in front a bar called Papillion, along Katpady-shirva Road, in the evening for obvious reasons.
Although local police asked the organizers to round off the event at 11 PM near midnight, the concert of music went on and on. The police intervened to stop the revelry, but the enraged youths started scolding the law enforcers, and pelted stones at the police.
Head Constable at Katpady outpost, Yogish Padakannaya (53) of Mangalore was hit by a stone, seriously injuring him, and he died at the Government hospital despite medical attention.
The enraged police took into custody a number of people, including organizers Wilfred Oswald D’Mello, Ravi Prakash Acharya and state honours were accorded to the deceased, on Chandu maidan by SP, Dy SP and ASP on Monday, along with other police officials and civilians.
Local people have urged the police not to permit any more revelries that only end in violence and death in future, although AY club had organised them for years so far.
