Mangalore : A protest rally was conducted by CITU local branch, to raise wages of head load workers in the Bunder area, on Monday in front of DCO gates in the city.
Workers upto 60% of total organised labour are in this field, getting only wages and nothing more. Price rises in essential goods of daily needs everyday, are eating into their daily earnings depriving them of normal civic benefits. They are at their wits’ end to leak out a living gracefully. A minimum wage must be fixed for every section of such port workers. CITU has come forward to lead this distraught and suffering sections of workers in society now, said Balakrishna Shetty, its DK unit chief at the meeting today.
The struggle would continue until the workers’ wage demands are fully met, Vasant Acharya CITU local General Secretary observed.
Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal, Nazeer Bengre, Rafeeq Harekal, along with hundreds of head load carrier daily wage workers were in the protest rally.
