Mangaluru : Health Minister U.T. Khader inaugurated the Teachers’ Day organised by the office of the Block Education Officer, Mangaluru South, at the St. Sebastian Hall, in the city on Saturday. September 5.
Speaking after lighting the lamp, Health Minister U.T. Khader said the Health Department was ready to provide health insurance coverage for teachers in aided and unaided schools under the Aarogya Sanjeevini Scheme.
Chief guest MLC Ganesh Karnik said CCE process is cumbersome. “Though I am not an educational expert, I do not find any need for such a type of evaluation process.”
Mr. Karnik said teachers are made to keep a detailed record of each child and this hardly leaves any time for them to teach children. “There were no such systems during our times but teachers did well to evaluate us and guide us,” Mr. Karnik said referring to a teacher from the government primary school in his village in Karkala taluk, who has been a big influence on him. “I know difficulties you are going through. I have raised this before the Education Minister (Kimmane Ratnakar),” he said.
Navel Britto, former headmistress of Holy Primary School, came in support of the CCE system. In her address after being felicitated on her retirement from service, Ms. Britto said the new system has made teachers creative in coming out with activities that make students understand concepts easily. “It is helping slow learners a lot,” she said, adding that there was a need to bring in changes in the CCE to make it more effective.
Former Principal of Yenepoya School C.K. Manjunath said teachers need to change the present culture of evaluation that was necessary to encourage children in the fields that they like.
