Mangalore : Heavy rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Sunday throwing normal life out of gear in several parts of the districts. The rains also claimed a life in Dakshina Kannada on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Chinnappa Gowda, who died while walking on a vented dam built across a stream in Kalledikatte at Harihara Pallathadka in Sullia.
Several trees and electric poles were uprooted across Udupi district, thus disrupting the movement of vehicles. Sea erosion has intensified in Udyavara, Katpady and Kodibengre.
Flood water has entered houses in Kadekaru, Saligrama, Giliyar, Kavadi, Uppur, Neelavara, Bannadi with Seetha and Madisalu rivers overflowing, water from Sauparnika river in Kundapura has entered low lying areas. Hundreds of farm land in Koni, Haladi, Shankaranarayana and Siddapura have been inundated.
With the rains lashing Udupi, hundreds of people were shifted to gruel centres opened at Bannadi, Kota and Pandeshwara. Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr M R Reju has declared holiday for schools on Monday following heavy rains for the last two days. He has urged the fishermen not to venture into sea.
Swarna, Seetha and Madisalu rivers were seen overflowing in Uppur, Barkur, Mabukala, Bandimutt, Aroor, Neelavara, Ellampalli thus inundating several acres of agriculture land.
A Government Higher Primary School in Uppor was inundated. The road connecting Uppoor-Kudrubettu has been flooded, thus disrupting the movement of vehicles. Flood water was seen overflowing on road connecting Uppur-Jathabettu and entered anganwadi building at Bandimutt in Barkur. Several houses in Handadi, Mabukala, Saligrama, Kota have been inundated. Several trees were uprooted in Handadi, Neelavara and Ellampalli. Aroor Belmar has lost connectivity with rest of the village, thus converting the region into an island in Kunjal Gram Panchayat limits. The road from Kolalagiri to Belmar is also filled with water.
Varahi river is overflowing in Haladi village. As a result, Chikku temple and two houses have been inundated. The officials from Fire Service rushed to the spot and shifted the people to safer places. Mundukodu Durgaparameshwari Temple and surrounding houses have been inundated. Krodabailur, Sauda Agrahara have been converted into islands.
Owing to the overflow of Heravali stream, the soil which was dumped for the construction of a bridge has been washed away. A tree which fell on Virajpet-Baindur state Highway on Saturday night disrupted the movement of vehicles.
Naxal infested areas of Devarabalu have been inundated following the overflow of Kubba river. With water entering Kabbinale, Hosabalu and Chakramaidan several villagers have been cut off from Hallihole. Water has entered Kamalashile Brahmidurgaparameshwari temple.
In the last 24 hours, Udupi district has received an average of 122.13 mm rainfall. This include Kundapur—164.2 mm, Karkala—116.2 mm and Udupi—86 mm.
Owing to the poor quality of work at Varahi, several houses and fields were damaged at Holebagilu, Thombattu, Hosangadi, Holeshankaranarayana, Thenkur, Jambur. The canal of Varahi project breached and water entered more than 10 acres field. Owing to the incompletion of vented dam built across Chonali stream at Badabalu, water has entered 40 acre of farm land.
Many streams, drains and rivers are overflowing following the region receiving heavy rains. The low lying areas in Adamkudru and Jeppu have been inundated.
As many as 30 trees were uprooted in and around Mangaladevi in Mangalore on Sunday. With the uprooting of a tree, the roof of Mangaladevi temple has been partially damaged. Two houses have been damaged when a tree fell on it. As many as eight electric poles have been uprooted in the region.
Menawhile, with the water overflowing on Hosamata bridge, the road between Uppinangady-Kadaba was blocked for five hours in the morning. The water level of Nethravathi has reached 25 metre in Uppinangady while it has reached maximum level at bathing point (Snanaghatta) in Dharmathala.- DH News
