Mumbai : Heavy and continuous rainfall lashed Mumbai from Saturday morning to Sunday night with the city and suburbs both recording the highest 24-hour rainfall of the season until now. The 24 hours between 8.30 am on Saturday and 8.30 am on Sunday saw Santacruz receiving 192.4 mm of rain, while Colaba received 210.9 mm.
South Mumbai received the heaviest showers, with the Colaba weather station recording 284.9 mm of rain between 5.30 pm on Saturday and 5.30 pm on Sunday, along with gusty winds and several parts of south central Mumbai experiencing waterlogging.
On Sunday, in just nine hours from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, Colaba recorded a whopping 92.7 mm rainfall, while Santacruz recorded 18.2 mm in the same time.
IMD officials said heavy showers will last for another 48 hours. Deputy Director of the IMD’s Regional Mumbai Center V K Rajeev said the rainfall was unusually high in the island city. Citizens can expect alternating heavy showers (from the city to the suburbs and back to the city) for a maximum period of 48 hours, he said.
