Karkala : Hebri station house officer, Seetharam, on May 5, Monday arrested two ruffians, who are said to aides of notorious underworld fugitive Udupi Kali Yogish.
The duo had made a call to textiles merchant from the town, in the name of underworld don Ravi Poojary, and demanded the ransom of Rs 50 lakh and threatened to kill him, if he fails to pay.
The textile merchant has been identified as Hebri Yogish Bhat, who in the complaint claimed that he was getting calls from underworld fugitive Ravi Poojary. For the few days after receiving the call, Bhat ignored the calls, but on April 25, two youngsters visited his house and told him that they have been sent to warn him and went away.
The arrested are identified as Tellar Nitin (23), and Abubakker Siddique (26) hailing from Balepuni, Bantwal. It is also learnt that the accused are also facing a case of threatening a person named Joy hailing from Kerala, who currently resides at Mala and involved with operating stone quarries.
Bhat who had gone through the photographs found in the collection of police department and succeeded in identifying them, who on Monday conducted the raid at the place at Hebri and arrested the duo.
Hebri station house officer, Seetharam, and his staff participated in the arrest operation under the directions of Udupi district superintendent of police, Boralingaiah and instructions of assistant superintendent of police, Annamalai.
