Mangalore : Here’s a smart shoe that will of great help and boon to the visually challenged, thanks to some innovative young minds from the Srinivas Institute of Technology in Mangalore. Four final semester Electronics and Communication Engineering students of the Institute have developed the footwear equipped with sensors and Global Positioning System (GPS)
A visually challenged person who wears this shoe will be alerted of any obstacle in his path by the vibrators in the shoes. The GPS equipment will help the person reach his destination and the equipment also has a wristband with a keypad which can guide the user to his destination.
A nine volt rechargeable battery, a speaker and a wire are the other accessories fitted in the shoe.
The project developed by Razik P, Sanjay P Nambiar, Sooraj PV and Shravan under the guidance of the department of electronics and communication’s Assistant Professor Satish Kumar K, was sponsored by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology and Indian Institute of Science and Technology.The estimated cost of the shoe is Rs 15000.
