Udupi : The state High Court has postponed elections to the post of Udupi Zilla Panchayat President and Vice President by a week. The elections slated to be held on October 4 had earlier been postponed to October 12 after the ruling BJP members failed to attend the meeting. The problem arose after a few ruling BJP members openly rebelled against the party.
Lack of quorum forced the election officer to postpone the elections despite opposition from Congress members.
In developments later on, K Diwaker Kunder, the Congress candidate for the post of ZP chief, had moved the High Court arguing that the election ought to have been held despite lack of quorum. But the High Court has decided to stay the elections and postpone it by a week.
The main reason for the abstention of the BJP members was the fact that eight out of the 16 ZP members of the BJP had rebelled against the party and were supporters of the former Kundapur MLA Halady Srinivas Shetty.
Later, the party decided to choose Indira Shetty from the rebel group as its vice president candidate and Upendra Nayak for the post of ZP president.
