Udupi: On Monday night (March 21) people living here near the Malpe coast had fearful prospect of Tsunami waves hitting west coast and were again in shock to see high waves hitting the shores. The sea was turbulent and rose in height to frighten the fishermen out of their wits. High tides were felt by fishing boatmen at Kaup, Muloor, Uchila, padukere and Mattu Udyawara in Udupi Dt., creating a rainy season atmosphere.
Boisterous waves entered fisheries road in Katpady on Tuesday afternoon, and boatmen had to give up fishing for 2 days and tie their boats in higher safe places. Water levels rose in rivers attached to the Arabian Sea. Even in Kaup the waters rose a meter higher near the historic Light-house. Localyouths began to prepare to face floods at night.
People in Nellikunje Kadappura at Kasargod fled their homes for safety.
The residents found water levels continually rising on Tuesday (last) night near beaches. The waves on way back pulled 20 boats, country or fishing ones, nets and other equipments, loosening their holds. Some youths fought against the waves to save marine materials with their boats. By 2am today, however, the sea regained its calm postures.
Usually on Full Moon days, sea waves rise higher, but beside in an hour, but this week, they did not gain calm forms for several hours, causing anxiety in fishermen’s homes.
