Mangalore : The Hindu Jana Jagrithi Samithi staged a protest outside the DC office in Mangalore on January 29, Tuesday condemning the decision of the Union Government to set up a Tipu Sultan University at Srirangapatna in Mandya district.
Addressing the protestors, Ramananda Gowda, Convenor of the Samithi said the Samithi was strongly against the setting up of the university and has urged the government to revoke its order in this regard. The Samithi would stage a severe protest otherwise, he warned.
Gowda further said that naming of the University after Tipu Sultan was highly deplorable and dubbed Tipu as fanatic and anti-Hindu ruler who was responsible for converting thousands of Hindu families in Kodagu to Islam. He further said that Tipu was also responsible for destroying several temples during his tenure. The Samithi said that setting up of a Muslim University was also unconstitutional and criticized the Union Minorities Affairs Minister Rahman Khan for his initiative in setting up five such universities in India.
Speakers at the protest also referred to the Aligarh Muslim University and said several students of this university had been arrested on charges of disruptive activities in Kanpur, Delhi and other places and alleged setting up of a separate Muslim university would encourage disruptive activities.
Samithi leaders Sukanya Acharya, Shivarao and others were present.
