Puttur: A Hindu Samajotsava(Community fair) organised at the uppinangady maidan near here on Sunday, met with resistance and took an ugly turn, when some people protested against the communal programme as provocative speeches were made there.

The protestors clashed with some participants of the Fair when they were returning after the assembly. There was stone pelting and police had to intervene, and even cane charge the crowds to bring them under control and force them to behave better, at the local bus stand.

In spite of SI’s intervention, another round of heated arguments and stone pelting took place at the gathering, to force policemen to resort to lathi-charge one more.

Two different communities Hindus and Muslims, ranged against each other in their religious centres.

SP Abhishek Goyal visited the area to maintain order and peace. About 500 police were deployed to quell the riots after the show.
