New Delhi : Libya’s interior minister has resigned to support protesters. He said that the movement against Muammar Gaddafi’s 41-year-rule will end in victory for the people in a short time it was reported here Wednesday.
Interior Minister Younis quit this week after hearing that 300 civilians have been butchered in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi. He accused Gaddafi of attacking civilians on a large scale.
“Gaddafi told me he was planning to use airplanes against the people in Benghazi, and I told him that he will kill thousands of people if he does that,” the Minister was quoted on Wednesday.
A defiant Gaddafi, in power since 1969, in a televised speech Tuesday, refused to step down. But mass uprising continuous and he has vowed to die “a martyr” in his country.
According to international reports, around 500 people have been killed and up to
4,000 injured in clashes with government forces since protests began on Feb 15.
The resigned minister Abidi said he now supported the people and the revolution.
Gaddafi being “a stubborn man” will not give up, and “ he (Gaddafi) will either commit suicide or he will get killed”.
Abidi hoped the revolution will succeed soon, and he called on Libyan security forces “to join the people in the intifada (uprising)”.
He added that the entire eastern part of the country is no longer under Gaddafi’s control.
Libyan ambassador to the US, Ali Aujali, also called for Gaddafi’s resignation, joining the voices of Libyan officials, and people in revolt.
