Mangalore: The Mangalore University at its Syndicate meeting on Thursday, decided to present the 2011 honourary doctorate degrees to 3 eminent persons scholar/writer Bannanje Govindacharya, Artist world server academist server DK Chouta, and retired IGP/DGP Ajay Kumar Singh.
The three names will be sent for approval of Chancellor Hans Raj Bhardwaj, governor of Karnataka, university sources stated on Thursday.
At the Mangalore University Convocation Hall “Mangala”, degrees and honourary doctorate would be given in April 30.
The University Syndicate members were embroiled in fierce discussions this tear over who should be given honourary doctorates, as undeserving persons had allegedly been conferred with such degrees in the past. There was even a silly charge that these degrees were on scale. Although the vice-chancellor favoured discontinuance of such (Doctorate) degrees, the MU Syndicate members were for continuing the tradition carefully in future. The Vice Chancellor had fallen in line with this enlightened thinking of limiting the Doctorates to a few really deserving individuals in view of their exceptional achievements. There is some lobbying still in force, it is learnt.
The 10 crore rupees Auditorium “Mangala” opens on Apr 29 with 1000 seats. Dr.M.Veerappa Moily, Dr.V.S Acharya, and state Governor DR. HR Bhardwaj will be present on the occasion. Justice M.N Venkatachalaiah will deliver the key note address, MU sources said.
