Mangaluru: The horticulture department, which governs Kadri Park, has plans to install CCTV cameras on all prominent corners and footpaths inside the biggest park in the city.
The department will either implement the project through government sanctions or through sponsors. Vijaya Bank and Karnataka Bank have already allotted funds for the development of the park. Hence, the CCTV camera surveillance project is expected to be implemented through sponsors soon.
“We have plans to install CCTV cameras in the park if any sponsors come forward to offer funds. Many have offered sponsorship for the development of the park. Many banks have donated funds for various developmental works. The pergola in the children’s play area was sponsored by Vijaya Bank. Meanwhile, Karnataka Bank has sponsored solar lamps. Hence, we are expecting sponsorship for CCTV cameras. However, we are yet to submit a proposal in this regard to the government,” said Janaki S, senior assistant director of the horticulture department.
Currently, Mangaluru East police has been keeping vigil on the park by deputing policemen regularly, she said, adding that the police are carrying out regular rounds based on an application submitted by the department.
The CCTV project was mooted in the wake of recent instances of public nuisance, she said. “We will seek funds from the department. This year, we have not included installation of CCTVs in the action plan. At the same time, we will also look for sponsors to take up the work. We will have to get approval from the state directorate to implement the project,” she added.
Meanwhile, citizens suggest that a people-friendly policing is better to curb menaces in the park. Vidya Dinker, coordinator, Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development, said the police should develop a good relation with the visitors of the park and keep vigil on the premises. “A non-intrusive eye on part of the police is better than CCTV cameras in the park, where people arrive for privacy,” she added.
