If you have observed that you seem to be losing a few strands of hair every day, you are not alone. Dermatologists agree that on an average, people lose between 50 to 100 hair strands each day. This is quite normal because new hair grows to replace that which has been lost. However, there are times when too much exposure to unhealthy conditions such as heat or chemicals causes hair to fall out. Bhringraj oil is a herbal remedy that promotes hair growth and therefore, is worth trying in such situations.
Bhringraj is a herb Eclipta alba that Ayurveda considers a ‘rasayana’ – that is, a substance that acts as a rejuvenative and slows down the ageing process. Indeed, this is one of the most effective herbs for haircare and is a vital ingredient of many hair products that are used to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss. Bhringraj oil is generally a combination of bhringraj extract with coconut or sesame oil. Some of the most important actions of bhringraj oil include the following.
According to Ayurveda, hair loss and other problems with hair are a result of an excess of the pitta component; because bhringraj oil helps to pacify this, it works to promote hair growth. Regular massage using this oil increases the circulation of blood to the scalp. In turn, this activates the hair follicles, resulting in increased hair growth. Bhringraj oil formulations may also contain other herbs such as shikakai and amla along with sesame or coconut oil – all these ingredients work together to make hair healthier and more lustrous.
Regular massage with bhringraj oil is useful in preventing infections of the scalp so it helps to keep dandruff away. Using it on a regular basis prevents the greying of hair and helps it retain its original colour.
Ayurveda says that imbalance in pitta leads to stress in the body and mind; the regular use of bhringraj helps to pacify the vitiated pitta and thus, helps to relieve stress. This has a highly beneficial effect especially in people who suffer from stress-induced hair loss. On a related note, massage with bhringraj oil also helps to provide relief from tension and headaches.
This oil is commercially available as a mixture of bhringraj extracts in some carrier oil. Alternatively, you can purchase bhringraj powder and mix a little quantity of it in an oil of your choice at the time of use. Massage the oil gently onto the scalp and leave it on for a few hours. Then wash it off with a mild shampoo or even better, a mixture of shikakai and soapnut powder.
Bhringraj oil is a natural product and therefore, has no harmful effects. However, because of its cooling action, it is not advisable to leave the oil on the scalp overnight. Also, it is not recommended for use in winters especially by people with a tendency to catch a cold.
Several brands of bhringraj oil are easily available at all major pharmacies and stores selling herbal medication. Some of the well-known brands include Baidyanath Mahabhringraj Tail, Dabur Mahabhringraj Oil and Khadi Herbal Bhringraj Hair Oil.
After a few weeks of using bhringraj oil, you are bound to notice a gradual change in the quality of your hair. However, despite using this oil, if you notice your hair falling out at an alarmingly high rate, it could be an indication of some underlying medical condition such as a thyroid problem. In such a situation, it is best to consult a dermatologist and take measures they recommend to deal with your hair fall problem.
