Mangalore, Jan 17, 2012: Human Right Commission chairman S R Nayak conducted the sudden inspection at District Sub Jail on January 17, Tuesday.
Speaking after the inspection, he said that the he has conducted the inspection in the jail without giving any information to the jail authorities, so no chance was given to them to be ready for the inspection.
He also said that the jail inmates complained on three major problems they are facing in the jail. He said that some of the jail inmates who came for the punishment for 6 months term are still in jail for more than three years, since they have not been produced before the court for any further hearing. There is delay in the investigation going and these are continuing their punishment working in the Kitchen room and other, hence he urged Police Commissioner to conduct investigation on their cases and release after their hearings, he said.
Speaking on the cleanliness of the jail, he said that the jail authorities have not maintained the cleanliness of the jail making a chance for epidemical or other ways to them.
He said that the inmates also complained on the food given to them to eat in the jail. He said that he was not satisfied with the ways of food given to them which do not contain vegetables and required nutrition to the inmates.
Hence they must provide minimum human basic facilities and provide qualitative and quantitative food and this must be included in police manual and must be continued.
Mr Nayak said that the jail which has the capacity of 150 inmates, but 250 inmates are living together, hence the state government must shift the jail in the selected area within one year for the welfare of inmates and their health. If it is delayed, it will be violation of human rights, he said.
Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh and Bundar Police Station Inspector Vinay Gaonkar were present.
