Mangalore : Western Range IGP Pratap Reddy inaugurated a workshop on ‘Human Rights Advocacy’ organized by the Department of Political Science, St Aloysius College here on March 20, Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that society plays a major role in human rights protection and law alone does not stand responsible to guarantee it.
He also said that Police Act of 1861 still has not been amended even after 64 years of independence. This has been the greatest obstacle in not meeting the expectations of the people in protecting human rights.
IGP said that if people do not start demanding for certain reforms, then human rights will remain just as a dream.
Fr Swebert D’Silva, Principal of St Aloysius College, presided over the function.
Dr Vivian Lord from University of North Carolina delivered a key-note address on ‘Women and criminal justice.’
