Mangalore : A Save Beach campaign organised in various beaches in Mangalore saw a record participation by over 1200 volunteers including students, NSS volunteers and public. The campaign was organised by the Matha Amrithanandamayi Mutt with the co-operation of other organizations.
The campaign was held at Someshwar, Panambur, Chitrapura, Suratkal, Hosabettu, Tannirbavi and Mukka beaches.
It began early in the morning after a breathing exercise. If the clean up at most beaches were completed within two hours, the situation was not the same in Tannirbavi beach where over 400 volunteers had arrived. Despite hectic efforts only half of the garbage could be cleared. Meanwhile, volunteers suffered cuts and bruises during the drive due to the presence of a large number of bottles.
Yathish Baikampady, CEO of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project stressed the need for such drives at least once a month.
