Mangalore : The Ashraya Rehabilitation Centre at Nantur here was raided by the Kadri police and officials of the department of women and child welfare on the night of February 3, Sunday after locals complained that the Centre owner Upendra Naik was harassing and ill-treating the inmates.
The complaint was lodged after locals noticed a girl from the centre escaping after climbing the compound wall. However the owner who rushed towards her in his vehicle, then took her back, it is learnt. There are reports that the owner of the Centre was ill-treating the inmates and was also not providing them food and water properly.
There is also a complaint that he used to strip the particular girl and then ill-treat her. Locals also said a year ago, a girl had also tried to escape. Police then had failed to register a complaint saying they needed strong evidences that the inmates were ill-treated.
In the meantime, all the 21 inmates of the centre including men and women were shifted to Wenlock Hospital.
