New Delhi: Home Minster P. Chidambaram has desired capacity building of police in the country to tackle crime rates, by adequate technology and sufficient funds.
He wanted to remove existing deficiencies before taking up community policing which was an exercise in trust between the Police forces and the public at large.
He was speaking after inaugurating a 3-day global meet on community policing attended by police officers of 42 countries in Indian Capital City. He assured that he could get 4 lakhs of police personnel in India to fill up vacancies, in due course.
He observed that Indian Police lagged behind intelligence information coming in, to act. They need higher technology to tackle modern criminals. He asked Police not to abdicate their prime responsibility of reducing crime.
He cited the “people friendly protection project” of Kerala, and Delhi’s “Eyes and Ears” (of law) as good examples of the large scale policing, which helped crush the crime rates, brought on by private militia teams in the country.
