New Delhi: Not in 2011, but in 1984, leading to large scale riots and murders of Sikhs on streets in Delhi region.
Indira Gandhi lived on eventful life, full of action. As a girl, she led a monkey’s brigade of boys and girls fighting for freedom against the British.
She married a Farsee, Feroze Gandhi and MP against Nehru’s wishes. Gandhi sold Foreign Liquors like Sherry to Nehru household and whiskey to other lesser men.
In Parliament, Nehru and Feroz clashed. After 2 sons, Feroz passed away and Indira moved to PM Nehru’s household as a caretaker, when he was being spoilt by women like Edwina Mountbatten and Padmaja Naidu.
Indira learnt diplomacy under Nehru for 15 years, treating guests at home, who came to see the PM. The Non-aligned Movement led by Nehru provided her all the opportunities, later to take care of Arabs against the news, USA and England.
Indira Priyadarshini studied in France and knew French well. Where Nehru suffered paralysis in 1964 and lay dying in May, She offered her own blood to rescue him but it did not work.
Kamaraj Nadar did not select her immediately as Nehru’s successor, because she was too young and in experienced.
She became information minister under Lal Bahudur Srivastava (Shastriji) as PM in 1964-66.
She spoilt the monolithic congress in 1966. She was the darling of Congress Party and was quite attractive as a young diplomat. Later she had handled Yasser Arafat and the Russians (having a 20 year Friendship pact).
She defeated Moraji Desai in a Lok Sabha battle for supremacy in 1966 and became PM (in March 1966), on the sudden end of Shastriji, due to any ugly international conspiracy, at Tashkent.
Shastriji had won the 1965 war against Pakistan. Indira won hands down in 1970-71, the Bangla war against Pakistan and the dogs of Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto.
She was called ‘Durga’ then and President V.V. Giri conferred ‘Bharat Ratna’ on her in 1971.
She honoured in turn General Manek Shaw with a ‘Field Marshal’ title.
She lost her second son Sanjay in a misunderstanding and air accident.
She was known as the only man in her cabinet, for 15 years. Tow Sikh bodyguards killed her on way from home to her office on 31-10-1984 at no.1, Safdar jung Road in New Delhi when a documentary film was under way.
