Mangalore: Senior Beary activist Attur Cheyyabba on Sunday, speaking at an interaction programme arranged by Beary Sahithya Academy pleaded for working, preserving and promoting Beary language and culture, without mixing religious ideas with it. The Academy according to him, did not exist for religious publicity.
He asked Beary people to write in their own (mother) tongue without misgivings. He wanted a look into and debate on Beary books published so far. He asked the Academy to bring out a bi-lingual dictionary and stressed upon lots of research work, relating to Beary history, culture, society and tongue. Cheyyabba, however wanted Beary’s to remain Muslims but develop their society.
He recalled that women in bygone days sang in praise of Arab Kings, not their religion.
KMK Manjanady, Headmaster at Ullal High School, observed that the Beary language was included in Pratibha Karanji competitions for students. More cultural events could be conducted in Beary institutions, even in colleges.
Pradeep kalkur, DK President for Kannada Sahithya Parishat, wanted unity amid growth of 4-6 academies started since our Independence.
MB Abdul Rehman, chairman of Beary Academy informed that all the problems affecting Beary as a community were not in the purview of his institution. In 22 months of its existence, it had conducted 55 programmes. BA Moideen, a former minister, presided. Umarabba and Basheer B., were present.
