Mangaluru: the Central government’s decision to invalidate Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency had affected the routine life of people at many places in the city on Wednesday.
Most of the retail business has been fallen down due to the sudden invalidation of the currency. Market, statebank and street vendors were waiting for the customers with the currency of Rs 100 and less than that.
Jewellery shops, petrol pumps, cloth centres, electronic shops, grocery shop, hotels and other trade centres witnessed the ‘draught’ of customers. Many places this matter became the reason for quarrelling also.
Many jewellery shops and other shop keepers refused to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency.
“We are not receiving 500 and 1000 rupees currency notes. We have informed the same to the customers also. Either we accept cross check, credit card or debit card, but we won’t sell the jewel until the customer pays the bill,” said manager of a jewellery shop.
Moreover, many people on Tuesday night rushed into the jewellery shops to exchange their Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency into gold. Due to this the price of gold increased to Rs 280 per gram and this caused head ache to the customers also.
Central market which was known for the rush of people was seen empty without customers. Many vendors as well as street vendors refused to accept 500 and 1000 currency notes. Same thing happened in fish market also. Many fish sellers were selling the fish for Rs 500 or Rs 1000, but they were not giving back the change.
Amid of these confusions some have started to exchange the Rs 500 currency notes to Rs 400 and Rs 1000 currency notes to Rs 800. They were spreading the false information like the notes should be exchanged within two days or else those currency will become just piece of paper. The incident was reported from Thokkottu and Talapady areas.
