Heard of KPS Gill? He was the first Super – cop. Ribeiro is the next one.
Born in 1929 in Mumbai, Julio F. Rebeiro, has degrees in Commerce and Law from Bombay University. He joined IPS in 1953 when he was barely 24. In 1982 he became Commissioner of Mumbai Police and stayed there till 1985. Subsequently, he was DG – CRF, DGP – Gujerat, Special Secretary in India’s Home Ministry, DGP – Punjab and finally, Adviser to Punjab governor, in quick succession. He was awarded the rank of Padma Bhushan in 1987.
Retiring from service, he became the Indian Ambassador to Romania, an East European Republic for 4 years serving upto 1993.
Ribeiro declined a gubernatorial post in Jammu – Kashmir state, in view of commitments in social work in 1994, when PM AB Vajpayee had called him. He served as Director in 2 private business companies.
He is currently fighting corruption in India through a trust. He has upheld communal harmony. He is involved in various Charitable institutions, as an upright Police officer in retirement. He is a columnist in newspapers and has authored a book on crimes, “Bullet for Bullet” based on his experience as a super-cop. He is married to Ms Melba and has 2 daughters.
He was recently honoured by BASF India Ltd, as Icon of “good governance” in Mangalore this week.
