Mangaluru : The City Police Commissioner S. Murugan said the traffic police are yet to synchronise different traffic signals on corridors. Only when the signals are synchronised, then would there be free flow of traffic. Without elaborating the reasons for the failure to synchronise the signals or the time by which it would be done.
Stating that he was not aware of traffic signal lights having timing of up to three minutes, the Commissioner said there is a need to regulate vehicular traffic to and from junctions of National Highways abutting the city. Only then systematic flow of traffic could be ensured, he said.
Narrow roads and unscientifically planned traffic junctions too contribute to the logjams at traffic signals, Mr. Murugan said. Added to this, is the problem with vehicular parking with no dedicated space for parking. Junction would not allow free movement of traffic even when there is green light, he said.
Mr. Murugan said though he wanted to convene a meeting of all the stakeholders — City Corporation, residents/ businessmen near junctions and others — about improvement of junctions, the same did not materialise as his personnel were yet to come out with certain crucial details. Such a meeting would soon be convened and junctions would be improved, he said.
