Mangalore : Justice Saldanha addressing the media persons at the press meet held at Hotel Woodlands said that the greatest disaster that has hit Dakshina Kannada district in the last century is the setting up of the Mangalore SEZ.
He also said that, the corruption and the fraud involved in the entire project that is supposed to bring employment and prosperity to the region which is the greatest Fraud and Lie has only spelt death, destruction, havoc and misery.
In this matter, the human rights violation have been so serious that the International Human Rights Organizations had written to the government of India, asking to explain as to how in a civilized country and a democratic set-up, there can be such a total absence of the Rule of Law, he said.
He further resolved that the bill proposed by the Government of India on torture should be passed only after a public debate in the country, as it is full of loopholes and negative clauses. It is resolved that the judicial reforms suggested by Law minister Veerappa Moily should be expedited. The Human Rights activists are harassed in the State of Karnataka by foisting baseless cases, he informed.
Justice Saldanha also said that around 79 percent of SEZ victims belong to one community. Approximately 10 lakhs people are victims affected by SEZ.
The evaluation of the property of the victims made by the SEZ is very low to that of the actual price. The compensate Rs 35 per coconut tree and Rs 60 per mango trees, which would further yield more fruits in future.
Being rendered service as the justice, it is sad to say that, High Court so far has not granted a single relief for the victims of SEZ, he added.
Later, he also released the booklet ‘Horrifying Human Tragedy called Mangalore SEZ in Kannada on the occasion.
