“Kanasemba Kudureyaneri” is unusual (a Kannada film)
It is an unusual film, directed by able veteran Girish Kasarvalli, who also wrote the screenplay, along with Perla Gopalkrishna Pai, with a narration in a different and novel way. Both secured national awards. The split techniques of screenplay leaves viewers on 3 layers while they sit glued to their seats in wonder.
The characters introduced from time to time possess a lot of strength, demanding attention from filmgoers. The society is divided into those dreamers in city on one side and the villagers who ignore traditions followed by their dead elders.
Irya, a grave digger and his wife see certain dreams separately and believe they will come true. But they don’t. The Gowda of the village dies, but the couple do not understand the sequences as per the dreams. They are devastated that dreams do not happen (in reality), as portents. The film looks at the issue from different angles, of the grave-digger, a care taker and the son of Gowda.
Cinematographer M. Ramachandra heightens the intrinsic values of the film with his landscape shots of the block (waade) and distant fields in a natural set up.
V. Manohar’s music follows the moods of the situations. Every character has a purpose. Biradar, Sadashiva Brahmavara and Umasri are cut out for their hungry roles. Shivaranjan and Pavitra Lokesh as the couple provide admirable support, with a playing girl child Soundarya pointing to a future in human society.
