Karkala: In a latest addition to the case of drowning in quarry pits, three young women met a watery grave in a quarry pit at Nelligudde in Kalya village of Karkala on the evening of September 26, Wednesday.
According to SP Dr Boralingaiah, the three women who were relatives, worked in a nearby quarry and used to come to this place everyday to wash clothes and take bath.
The drowned women are Bharati (18), Huligamma (19) and Nagaratna (20), all hailing from Shirahatti in Gadag district. Reports also said the quarry pit in which the women drowned was unused since the past couple of years resulting in accumulation of water in it.
The mishap came to light when the girls who had been to the culvert did not return and anxious family members began a search when one of the bodies was first noticed. The other two bodies which were caught in slush nearly 14 feet deep, were later recovered.
A case has been registered in Karkala rural police station.
