Manipal: Dr (Col) M Dayananda Medical Superintendent and COO, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal stated that Kasturba Hospital, Manipal successfully harvested organs of two patients who were declared brain dead and coordinated in transporting them to various receivers at hospitals in Manipal, Mangaluru and Bengaluru.
One of the donors, Valerian Dsouza, aged 56 and resident of Kunjibettu, was admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal under the Department of Neurosurgery on November 3 night; he had suffered severe head injuries after meeting with a road accident near Perampalli. He was declared brain dead as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 by four senior doctors at 2.30 pm and 9.40 pm the following day. Valerian Dsouza’s wife expressed her willingness to donate the viable organs- corneas, kidneys and liver as per the Human Organ Transplantation Act 1994.
Of the organs harvested, one kidney would be for a patient at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and the other for a patient at AJ Hospital, Mangaluru. The liver would be transplanted in a patient at Apollo Hospital, Bengaluru. A green corridor was created on November 5 at 3.30 pm from Manipal to Mangaluru International Airport and AJ Hospital, Mangaluru.
The surgeons lead by Dr Padmaraj Hegde, Dr Arun Chawla, Dr BM Zeeshan from the Department of Urology and Dr Anitha Shenoy, Head of Department of Anesthesia – all from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and Dr Mahesh Gopashetty from Apollo Hospital, Bengaluru coordinated in harvesting the organs.
The other patient Kishore, aged 45, from Brahmavara was admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal under the Department of Neurosurgery and was admitted to the ICU on November 3 late night. He suffered head injuries after allegedly having a slip and fall.
Kishore was declared as brain dead as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 by four senior doctors at 6.00 pm on November 4 and 12 am on November 5.
Kishore’s siblings took the major decision of donating the viable organs- cornea, kidneys and liver. The team for harvesting organs arrived at Manipal on November 5 by 6.30 pm from BGS Hospital, Bengaluru. Of the organs harvested, one kidney has been identified for a patient in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and the other kidney for a patient in KMC Hospital, Mangaluru. The liver will give lease of life to a patient at BGS Hospital, Bengaluru.
