Bantwal: The Koraga community leaders, anxious to nurture their age-old culture facing neglect these days, have formed their indigenous tribal arts troupe, known as koral Arts Trope recently. They put up a show called “Gajamela” in their spoken language, at Vittal(Vitla) in Kuddupadav, in an association with state Kannada & Culture department.
Drum beats have a great significance in Koraga arts and life, in happiness and sorrow. The sounds have slowly vanished over the decades as they were shunned socially under modern social influences as tribals.
Gajamela was formed by chronicling the various rhythms of their drum beats. They have an intrinsic value to the koragas as a whole.
The audience in Vitla recently got a chance to hear various rhythms of drummed music used on different occasions. These drum shows have been held in several parts of the state in cultural meals.
The elder generations have educated the youth across Bantwal and Puttur in such shows on rythems used. Their dance recitals depict a traditional richness in weaving cane baskets, and heroic feats. A Compere explains the significance to the audience. Several artists participated in the lovely show.
