Manipal: The Karnataka-kerala Koraga Development Federation held a protest meeting against district administration in front of DCO and submitted a memorandum to DC, Dr. M.T. REJU to end the practice of Ajalu(crumbs-eating) in the district, practice that the Koragas seen to be addicted to like drinking local liquors. The Brahmins after their meals throw away the leftovers on banana leaves and Koragas used to eat them whether at a marriage function or a festival.
The Federation accused the district administrators of failing to curb this practice among their own people, as it they were forced to eat crumbs like beggars. Fed Chief Susheela Nada charged that Ajalu practice violated an Act of 2000 AD prohibiting it.
She cited a Nemotsava in Bakimaru field connected with Koti Chennaya history at Inna GP where Koragas performed Ajalu on January 16-17. Although the Tehsildar was alerted much earlier the tradition was practised at annual fair it was pointed out.
She asked the district authorities to implement the Law effectively. She demanded action against PDO and SI of Inna GP for the lapse.
If the practice of Ajalu was not eliminated, the Fed members would resort to indefinite hunger strike the Koraga leader warned the Udupi DC.
