Mangalore : The members of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) staged a dharna in front of District Commissioner’s office on October 14, Tuesday against the State government’s move to evict farmers engaged in the cultivation since years from the revenue and forest lands.
Speaking after inaugurating the dharna, K.R. Shriyan, president of KPRS urged the Government to protect the farmers cultivating crops in government lands for their livelihood. He also said that the government must initiate action against the rich who have encroached prime government land in and around Dakshina Kannada for luxury business.
Shriyan said that the government has issued notices to land holders, instead of distributing title deeds and is planning to evict them from their lands.
The farmers and the land owners are urging the government to amend Land Revenue Act which can help to provide title deeds to farmers engaged in farming. The Union and the State governments are bringing out anti-farmer policies, he said.
CITU District Secretary Vasanth Achari said that the government which is following the issuing eviction notices to farmers but has failed to certain conditions while sanctioning land to industrialists and private parties, many of whom developed the land for commercial purposes.
J Balakrishna Shetty, B.M Bhat, Krishnappa Salian, Sunil Kumar Bajal and others were present.
Prior to the protest meet they carried out a rally from Jyothi to DC office.
