Udupi : Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Chairman Dr Vamana Acharya has said he has come to know of the problems faced by people living in the vicinity of the UPCL thermal power plant, from the villagers themselves. He has also said that the Board would strive to protect the interests of the people.
The Chairman was speaking to reporters after inspecting the UPCL plant, its fly ash pond, coal complex, Pumping station, cooling tower and other sections. The Chairman was accompanied by Rajashekhar Puranik, Udupi District Pollution Control Board officer.
UPCL officials including COO Ravindran, CEO Panduranga Rao, Vice President Kishore Rao were also present.
Ratha Sangha leader including Vijaykumar Hegde, State Vice President of the Sangha explained the hardships of the villages due to the project and alleged the company has not taken any measure to reduce environmental pollution.
Several farmer leaders even submitted memorandum to the KSPCB Chairman and aired their grievances.
The farmer leaders also entered into an altercation with the company officials when they said water in the area was clean and fit for consumption.
