Subrahmanya : 600 devotees at the ancient Kukke Subrahmanya temple in Malnad performed “rolling over used plantain leaves after dinner by Brahmins here, defying DC’s orders.

The DK district administration faced Vehement protests from even tribal Malekudiyas ever the ban imposed on open “madesnana” roll-down Services on Banana leaf plates discarded by Brahmins after their meals as demeaning in human parlours.

But the ancient ritual had a faith behind it that the rolling persons will be free from all diseases as per legends of the holy shrine.

It was a part of Champa Shashti Mahotsava that culminates on November 30, 2011. The devotees had appealed to Dr. V.S. Acharya, the Muzrai minister, not to stop the ritual on temple grounds.

An Ashtamangala Quiz will be held soon to decide the controversy, when people want the ritual to continue into modern times. DC Channappa Gowda said that Malekudiyas do not engage in Made Snana’ ritual but support it.
