Chennai: The Madras High Court has given a green signal today for the two 1,000 MW Russian reactors at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP). Rejecting a petition, the court said there are no impediments against the mega atomic power project, around 650 kms from Chennai.

The court has also asked all safety recommendations of task force to be implemented. Earlier G Sundarrajan, the petitioner in the case, contended that the Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) had not implemented the entire 23 safety measures recommended by the task force. Currently on six recommendations have been complied with.

The court also rejected the petition challenging the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) clearance for the plant and gave a go-ahead to nuclear fuel loading at the site. The nuclear regulator had earlier given its nod to NPCIL to load the fuel in the first reactor on August 10.

The Tamil Nadu government has been asked to set up set up port and cold storage facility for fishermen and quality schools in Kudankulam. The government has also been directed to conduct offshore safety drills.
