Udupi : Dr. Satheesha Nayak B, Professor of Anatomy, Melaka Manipal Medical College (Manipal Campus) cleaned a stream as a weekend activity.
The stream is located at a place called Alambi, in the territory of 80th Badagabettu Gram Panchayath. This stream was very clean and beautiful before a bridge was constructed across it recently.
After the construction of the bridge, the passengers started dumping waste into the stream, literally making it a dumping yard. With the help of two youngsters Ankith Umesh Nayak and Amith Umesh Nayak, Dr. Nayak lifted the garbage from the stream and placed it on the bridge.
The team separated the waste, which included medicines, liquor bottles, sanitary napkins, foot wares, food, plastic waste etc. After keeping them neatly separated, Dr. Nayak stood at the bridge to show the waste to the passengers and created awareness among the passengers who travelled over the bridge.
He also requested the local Panchayath office to clear the waste from the bridge and to take necessary measures to prevent people from dumping garbage into the stream by providing proper areas for waste disposal.
Dr. Nayak is one among the top 2% Scientists of India as reported by a team of researchers of Stanford University recently. His contribution to environment also includes rescue of snakes and other animals and planting saplings in the areas around his house.
