Mangaluru: Hundreds of women fish vendors who sell fish at the fish market at State Bank area, staged a protest in front of the DC office on December 20, Thursday demanding a new fish market in the same area. The Mahila Meenu Marata Mandali organised the protest.
Addressing the protestors, advisor of the organisation P S Chengappa said the long standing demand of the fisher folk have not yet been met and the fisher women have to sell fish under a makeshift shelter since the past five decades. He also pointed out at the lack of facilities at the market. It was pathetic that the fish market of a would-be Smart City like Mangaluru should have such a deplorable condition.
Some fish vendors also spoke on the occasion narrating their woes.
Earlier, fish sellers took out a protest march from Rao and Rao Circle to the DC office where a memorandum was submitted to the district authorities.
