Udupi : Fishermen under the aegis of the Malpe Fishermen Association will suspend all fishing activities on November 22 in support of their demand for the strict implementation of the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986 and ban on illegal fishing of cuttle fish (Kappe Bondas) by Tamil Nadu fishermen
Speaking to reporters, Vasudeva Salian, Secretary of the Malpe Fishermen’s Association. Pointed out that over 15000 people at Malpe port rely on fishing and pointed out that there were over 1000 fishing boats in the harbour thought it could actually accommodate only 400. He further said the rule preventing fishermen from other states to venture into fishing within 12 nautical miles off the coast is often violated, thanks to the apathy of the authorities.
He said so far no stern action has followed those who violated the rule and pointed out how cases were instead filed against fishermen of the state by fishermen of Goa and Maharashtra, He demanded an end to illegal fishing of cuttle fish by Tamil Nadu fishermen.
He also said the fishing boats from Tamil Nadu were seen engaged in fishing even during the fishing barn period.
He said over 15000 people will take part in the protest and added the future course of action would be decided upon at a meeting on November 23.
Several fishermen leaders including Rama Kanchan, Gopal Kunder, Hiriyanna Kidiyoor were present.
