Malpe : Fishermen of Malpe under the aegis of the Malpe Fishermen Association refrained from fishing works on November 22, Thursday demanding the strict implementation of Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986 and also stern action against fishermen from outside states who engage in fishing in the state’s coast.
The protest was peaceful and Malpe harbor wore a deserted look. Several shops in the area too had downed their shutters.
Commenting on the issue, local MLA Raghupathi Bhat said the unscientific fishing of cuttle fish had continued this as the Act was not enforced strictly,.
He also emphasized the need for a permanent solution to the problem. It is learnt, the DC has ordered a ban on any illegal entry of boats in the area, till the new regulation comes into force. The order is expected to be revised every fortnight till the new Regulation is made effective.
