Mangaluru: Acting swiftly on specific intelligence, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Inteligence (DRI), Mangaluru intercepted Mohammed Farooque Armar, 51, a native of Bhatkal at Mangaluru International Airport on Thursday after he was found to possess bundles of foreign currency concealed in biscuit and confectionery packets.
Armar was supposed to board SpiceJet flight SG59 and the currencies were discovered during the checking of baggage.
Assorted currencies of US Dollars, British Pound, Euros, UAE Dirham, Saudi Riyals and Qatari Riyals adding up to 25,07,162 INR were seized from Armar as per provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
On questioning, Armar confessed to the offence and said that in the past too he had smuggled mobiles and confectionaries into India from the Gulf countries and with that he was able to purchase the foreign currency through various underground operators in Bhatkal, whose whereabouts the DRI is now investigating.
