Mangaluru : Principal District and Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced a 53-year-old man from Vitla to life on finding him guilty of murdering his mother in their house two years ago.
Dombayya Poojary (53) was arrested by the Vitla police on the charge of murdering his mother, Sankamma (76) at their house in Kundadka village on February 19, 2013. According to the police, Dombayya Poojary was taken to task by his mother for not going out for work. On February 19, he allegedly used a sharp object to hit his mother on her head, neck and legs that led to her death.
Investigation officer Anil S. Kulkarni filed a chargesheet against Dombayya Poojary and had cited Dombayya’s wife and younger sister as prime witnesses. During examination by Public Prosecutor Pushparaj Adhyantaya before the court, Dombayya’s wife and younger sister though agreed that he had arguments with his mother, but refused to say that he had hit his mother.
Mr. Adhyantaya said Sankamma was staying with Dombayya and he had failed to prove his innocence .
The judge, Uma M.G, sentenced Dombayya Poojary to life for murder and also imposed fine of Rs. 5,000. The judge said Dombayya would have to undergo further imprisonment of six months if he failed to pay the fine amount.
