Mangalore: It appears that Mangalore Kenjaru airport not only needs a fresh licenses to welcome air services and say farewell to planes alighting at the new terminal, but also does not pass the Runway End Safety Area (RESA) norms test either Bajpe is now no longer an international airport perched on a hill but only a Cargo airport for carriers only. All other civil aviation facilities have been shifted to the nearby Kenjaru Terminal, which needs a minimum of 3000m of safe runway (without RESA calculations) for large bodies such as Jets, but at present it has only 2400m.
The RESA needs 90m (300 ft) from the existing runway, it is felt. If the RESA is extended upto 240m. Well and good but not insisted upon by DGCA. All 23 licensed airports (not Mangalore) across have been asked to follow prescribed safety norms. The AAI is going slow on lengthening and widening the runways on the west and east sides up 60m (200 ft) each East side has the land needed, not the Westside. Only narrow bodied aircrafts can arrive and deport at Mangalore now.
