Mangaluru: Former president of Mangalore Bar Association S P Chengappa has said that the Karnataka government should order a CBI inquiry into the death of IPS officer Madhukar Shetty.
He said if the experts opine that there was medical negligence in treating Shetty at Hyderabad an inquiry should be constituted. Shetty was deputy director of SVP National Police Academy there.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Chengappa said government has constituted a five-member committee of experts led by eminent cardiologist Dr Devi Prasad Shetty with director, department of medical education as the convener. The committee is tasked with looking in to medical files related to Shetty’s treatment and to take the next course of action and also to find out if there is a need for any enquiry in the aspect, Chengappa said. If the experts express doubts, it should be probed by an appropriate agency.
The committee was set up following suspicion expressed by family and friends on whether Shetty received required medical treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad, where he later succumbed. Noting that minister in the coalition government, too, had expressed the same doubts, Chengappa said with expert committee report expected soon, government should be ready to hand over the case to CBI. “Let it be an impartial committee report,” he said.
The state government should also name one of the police training centres in the state as ‘Sri Madhukar Shetty Memorial Police Training Centre’ as per an assurance given by home minister M B Patil, he said. The government should also take up programmes that will inspire the younger generations and IAS/IPS aspirants to carry forward the ethos/principles/legacy of the late IPS officer, whose life and works are an inspiration to all concerned.
