Mangalore : The Mangalore city has been brightened up for the Great Night of Shiva, popularly known as Maha Shivaratri.
On this great night thousands of Devotees thronged Shiva temples across the state to pay homage and pray for happiness, peace and prosperity on the auspicious occasion of Shivaratri today. Unlike other Hindu festivals, Mahashivaratri is being observed with profound silence, fasting and night-long vigil with the chanting of Bhajans.
The festival will be observed with traditional fervour in temples including Pandeshwara Malingeshwar Temple, Sri Kshetra Kadri and Sri Kshetra Gokarnanateshwara Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday, March 2.
Devotees worship Shivalinga and offer bilva leaves. According to their belief it is the symbolical union of individual soul with the supreme soul.
Whereas the Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple will celebrate the day with double spirit since it has received the silver chariot weighing 4,500 kg on the occasion of Shivaratri by Urmila Ramesh Kumar on February 18.
