Mangalore : MCC and police officials on February 11, Monday raided several shops close by schools and colleges in Mangalore and seized huge quantity of cigarette and gutka packets. The raid was held by MCC health inspector Bharath Kumnar and Kadri SI Madan.
The team raided nearly 15 shops close by Besant, Canara College, Sharada Vidyalaya, Gandhinagar School and Women’s Polytechnic, Balmatta. Nearly 300 cigarette packets and gunny bag full of gutka and other tobacco products were seized.
As per the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003, selling cigarettes and tobacco products to persons below 18 years of age, and within 100 yards of educational institutions is prohibited.
During the raid, it came to light that some shops had no licence and they were asked to shut down and open after availing licence.
