Mangaluru: A day after he was arrested for allegedly placing a mobile phone with its camera on in the women’s washroom at the Mangaluru University campus, M.Sc. student Santosh M. has been granted bail by a local magistrate court.
The 22-year-old was arrested for allegedly placing a second-hand mobile phone and a power bank inside the loo on August 24 in order to record women entering the washroom of the Biosciences block on campus. The Konaje police had the painstaking task of zeroing in on the culprit after closely scrutinising his images captured on the mobile phone and on CCTV cameras. They also went through footage from the commercial complex from where Santosh has purchased the phone.
Santosh has been charged under Section 354 (c) (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code.
On Thursday, the city police produced Santosh before the Third Judicial Magistrate First Class and sought his custody for three days. However, Santosh’s counsel filed a successful bail application under Section 436 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
