Konaje : Mangalore University will open an evening college on the premises of its constituent University College at Hampankatta from the academic year 2015-16. In addition, it will start a first grade college (or degree college) at Konaje, from the next academic year.
Announcing this at the Academic Council meeting on Monday the Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa said that the evening college would offer BA, B.Com, BBM, BCA and diploma courses in some foreign languages like French, German, Russian or Spanish.
He said that diploma in foreign languages would particularly help employees of Information Technology companies and other professionals during their foreign assignments.
The first grade college at Konaje would also offer all common degree courses. The classes would be held on the premises of Vishwamangala Pre-University College building.
Mr. Byrappa said that the university would conduct a two-day open house on its campus at Mangalagangotri to showcase the post-graduate courses and facilities available at the university for those who would opt for these courses.
The open house would be conducted just after final year undergraduate examinations get over, to help students to take a decision. He said organising such open houses was common in some foreign countries.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the university also planned to construct a hostel building for international students in the campus.
In his first address to the council after taking charge on June 5, Mr. Byrappa said that the university would present best teacher award for its post-graduate teachers from the current academic year. The award would be presented on September 5 on Teachers’ Day.
Teachers would be selected faculty-wise (like arts, science, commerce) and not subject-wise. They would be presented with cash and a citation. Research work, publications and teaching skills would be considered while selecting teachers for the award. Students’ evaluation of teachers would be added from next year before making the selection.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the university was also planning start a community radio service from 2015-16. It has plans to construct a commercial complex on the campus.
It would also house post-office, bank and ATMs.
The demand of teachers to construct a ‘vignan bhawan’ would be examined.
