Mangalore, July 20 Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University was honoured with the Colonel Commandant honorary rank by the Director General of National Cadet Corps (NCC), Ministry of Defence at a ceremony held at Mangalore University Campus at Mangalagangothri on July 20, Wednesday.
Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy is the third VC of the Mangalore University to receive this honorary rank conferred by the NCC directorate.
After receiving the honour, Prof Murthy assured to take the responsibility of promoting the NCC in all institutions affiliated to the University.
He also said that NCC cadets were second in the defence during India’s war with Pakistan. “The cadets were transporting weapons to the war field and helping the soldiers,” he said.
He informed that around 5,000 colleges and 7,000 schools across the country have NCC.
Speaking on the occasion, Colonel Dinesh P Naikvada, NCC Group Commander said that the rank given to the Vice-Chancellor will enable him to interact with NCC units, officers, and other cadets in the university and guide them.
Apart from Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, six other Vice Chancellors from different parts of India have been chosen for the rank of honorary colonel commandant in 2010-11. -PICs. Apul Ira
