Mangaluru : A heart was retrieved from a brain dead person and taken to M S Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru from AJ Hospital, Mangaluru.
According to hospital sources, Satish, 27, a carpenter, met with an accident at around 10 pm on February 18 near Karkal bypass resulting in grievous head injuries. He was initially taken to City Hospital in Karkal but later shifted to A J Hospital and Research Centre at 3 am on February 19. He was declared brain dead on February 20.
Satish’s family wanted his organs to be donated and soon after learning about the family’s wish, the Zonal Co-Ordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) was contacted for transplantation. ZCCK activated the Retrieval Team and the recipient list for organs. After necessary legal clearances, the Organ Retrieval Team of ZCCK came from Bengaluru to retrieve the organs on Tuesday.
While his heart was retrieved and sent to M S Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru by creating a green corridor from A J Hospital to Mangaluru airport, his liver was transported in the next flight to Manipal hospital in Bengaluru. Similarly, one kidney will be handed over to KMC, Manipal and another is being transplanted at A J Hospital itself.
Sathish hails from Padumarnadu in Moodbidri. His father Raghava Achar (63 years) is a carpenter and mother Sulochana is a homemaker. Sathish has two brothers Rajesh (31), also a carpenter and Mukesh (29) a goldsmith.
