Mangaluru : Chairman of the Standing Committee for Taxation, Finance and Appeals on Taxes Chairman Radhakrishna, who presented the 2019-20 budget here on Wednesday, pegged the revenue and expenditure for 2019-20 at ₹ 642.9 crore and ₹ 677.27 crore, respectively.
He said that the corporation has received ₹ 24.56 crore from self-assessment property tax till December 2018 as against an estimated ₹ 50 crore by March-end. It was the same with solid waste management cess where the corporation got ₹ 3.81 crore as against ₹ 8 crore; ₹ 23.44 crore (expected revenue ₹ 50 crore) from water bill, ₹ 6.73 crore from premium FAR, (₹ 22 crore), ₹ 63.97 lakh from trade licence (₹ 3.4 crore), ₹ 2.42 crore rent from corporation property (₹ 5.67 crore), ₹ 1.37 crore from advertisement tax (₹ 4.5 crore) and ₹ 48.61 lakh from building licence (₹ 1.5 crore).
Projected expenses for 2019-20 include ₹ 35 crore towards salary. Of the ₹ 69.38 crore towards outsourced work, ₹ 49 crore is for solid waste management, ₹ 3 crore for maintenance of street lights, ₹ 2.75 crore towards underground sewage infrastructure and ₹ 2.25 crore towards Malaria prevention.
The corporation has sought from State Finance Commission funds of ₹ 35 crore towards salary, ₹ 47 crore towards electricity, ₹ 40 crore as special State Finance Commission funds, ₹ 25 crore as State Finance Commission general funds and ₹ 6 crore for acquisition of land to be submerged for storing water at the Thumbe vented dam at 6 meters.
Among the other funds expected include ₹ 28 crore under the 14th Finance Commission funds, ₹ 3 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation Scheme, ₹ 5.14 crore from Swachh Bharat Mission and ₹ 2 crore from Coastal Development Authority.
Councillor Sudhis Shetty Kannur lamented over the lack of efforts by the officials in collection of property and other taxes. Councillor Premanand Shetty said that no schemes have been formulated by the corporation to encourage waste management at source that will greatly reduce expenditure on solid waste management.
Corporation Commissioner Abdul Nazeer defended officials saying that they were making efforts to collect dues. Mayor K. Bhaskar and others were present.
